If your dentist has recommended CEREC treatment for a damaged or decayed tooth, you’re probably wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into. The idea of getting a crown made and placed in a single appointment might sound too good to be true—or maybe a little intimidating if you’re used to the traditional two-visit process.

As a dentist who’s been using CEREC technology for years, I can tell you that most patients are pleasantly surprised by how straightforward and comfortable the process actually is. Let me walk you through exactly what happens during a CEREC appointment, so you know what to expect and can feel confident going in.
The entire process typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the complexity of your case. Yes, you’ll walk out with your permanent crown the same day—no temporary crown, no second appointment, no waiting weeks for a lab to make your restoration.
Antes de tu cita con CEREC
Your dentist will have already determined that you’re a good candidate for CEREC treatment during your consultation. Most teeth that need crowns can be restored with CEREC, though there are some cases where traditional lab-made crowns might still be the better choice (like certain complex bite situations or when multiple crowns need to match perfectly).
Here’s what you should know before your appointment:
- Eat beforehand: You’ll be numb for several hours after the procedure, so have a good meal before you arrive.
- Arrange transportation: While you won’t be sedated, some people prefer not to drive immediately after dental work.
Just like with any crown procedure, we’ll start by getting you completely numb. The local anesthetic is the same whether you’re getting a CEREC crown or a traditional one—this part hasn’t changed.
Once you’re comfortable, we’ll remove any decay and shape your tooth to receive the crown. This involves removing a small amount of tooth structure all around the tooth to make room for the crown material. If you’ve had a traditional crown before, this step feels exactly the same.
Paso 2: Impresiones digitales (10-15 minutos)
Here’s where CEREC gets interesting. Instead of biting into trays of impression material (which many patients find uncomfortable), we use a small digital camera to take detailed 3D images of your prepared tooth.
The camera wand is about the size of a large pen, and we’ll move it around your tooth taking hundreds of pictures from different angles. The computer stitches these together into a precise 3D model. You might taste a light dusting powder that we sometimes apply to the tooth—it’s completely harmless and helps the camera capture even better detail.
Now comes the really cool part. Using specialized software, your dentist will design your crown on the computer screen. The software automatically creates a preliminary design based on your tooth’s anatomy, but your dentist will fine-tune it to ensure proper fit, bite, and appearance.
You can actually watch this process and see your crown being designed. Your dentist might ask for your input on the shape or size, especially for front teeth where appearance is crucial. This is also a great time to ask questions about what you’re seeing on the screen.
Paso 4: Molienda (15-20 minutos)
Once the design is finalized, it’s sent to the milling machine—essentially a small robotic sculptor that carves your crown out of a solid block of ceramic material. The machine uses diamond-coated burs to precisely cut your crown to the exact specifications from the digital design.
You’ll hear the milling machine working in the background. It sounds a bit like a small CNC machine or 3D printer (which, in a way, it is). This is a great time to relax, listen to music, or chat with your dentist about the process.
When your crown comes out of the milling machine, it’s already very close to its final form, but it usually needs some finishing touches. Your dentist might:
- Suaviza cualquier irregularidad
Paso 6: Prueba y ajustes (10-20 minutos)
Now we’ll try the crown on your tooth to check the fit, bite, and appearance. Even with all our digital precision, minor adjustments are often needed. This is completely normal and expected.
You’ll bite down on articulating paper (that colored paper that marks your bite), and your dentist will make small adjustments until everything feels just right. Don’t worry if this takes a few tries—it’s much better to get it perfect now than to have problems later.
Paso 7: Cementación final (10-15 minutos)
Once everyone is happy with the fit and feel, it’s time to permanently cement the crown. The tooth and crown are cleaned thoroughly, and a strong dental cement is used to bond the crown in place.
This step involves keeping the area completely dry while the cement sets, so you’ll have suction and cotton rolls in your mouth for a few minutes. Some cements are light-cured (hardened with a special blue light), while others set chemically.
The digital impressions are definitely more comfortable than traditional impressions—no gagging or holding still with trays in your mouth. The preparation feels the same as any crown prep, and once you’re numb, you shouldn’t feel any discomfort during the procedure.
The most common complaint I hear is that it’s a long appointment. Your jaw might get a little tired from being open, but we take breaks as needed. Some patients actually prefer the longer single appointment to making multiple trips to the office.
Recovery from CEREC treatment is the same as with any crown. Here’s what to expect:
Cuidados posteriores inmediatos
- You’ll be numb for 2-4 hours after the appointment
CEREC crowns are cared for just like natural teeth. Brush, floss, and see your dentist regularly. The ceramic material doesn’t decay, but the tooth underneath still can if bacteria get under the crown edges.
I believe in being honest about limitations. CEREC isn’t perfect for every situation:
The key is choosing a dentist who’s experienced with CEREC and honest about when it’s the best choice versus when a traditional approach might be better.
La experiencia dental moderna
What I find interesting is how practices that invest in chairside technology like CEREC often think differently about the entire patient experience. The same efficiency mindset that draws dentists to same-day dentistry often extends to other aspects of the practice. I’ve noticed some of my CEREC colleagues are also modernizing their front-desk workflows—things like digital intake forms that can handle multiple languages, or systems like Intake.Dental that generate clinical notes from patient responses. It’s all part of making dentistry more efficient and comfortable for everyone.
- What happens if the crown doesn’t fit perfectly?
- What’s your policy if I need adjustments after the appointment?
Reflexiones finales
Most of my patients who get CEREC crowns are amazed by the process and relieved that they don’t have to come back for a second appointment. The technology continues to improve, and I expect same-day dentistry will become even more common in the coming years.
If your dentist has recommended CEREC treatment, you’re in for an interesting experience. The combination of high-tech precision and old-fashioned dental craftsmanship creates restorations that look great, feel comfortable, and last for many years.

Preguntas frecuentes
Yes, CEREC crowns are made from high-quality ceramic materials that are extremely strong and durable. The ceramic blocks used are actually more consistent in quality than some lab-made materials because they’re manufactured under controlled industrial conditions.
What if I don’t like how my CEREC crown looks or feels?
Since the crown is made while you’re in the chair, any issues with appearance or fit can usually be addressed immediately. Minor adjustments are common and expected. If major changes are needed, a new crown can be designed and milled the same day, though this is rare with experienced CEREC dentists.
The cost is usually comparable to traditional crowns, and when you factor in the time saved by not needing multiple appointments, many patients find CEREC to be more cost-effective overall. Some insurance companies even prefer CEREC because there’s no temporary crown phase, which reduces complications.
