The short version? CEREC treatment is remarkably straightforward from a patient’s perspective. You’ll spend about 90 minutes to two hours in the chair, and you’ll leave with your permanent crown already in place. But let’s dive into the details so you can feel confident about your upcoming appointment.
The system combines three key technologies: a digital scanner that captures precise images of your tooth, computer software that designs your crown, and a milling machine that carves it from a solid block of ceramic material. It’s like having a dental lab right in the operatory.
Antes de tu cita con CEREC
Your preparation is minimal, but there are a few things worth knowing. Eat a normal meal before your appointment—you’ll be numb for several hours afterward, so you won’t want to eat immediately following treatment. If you’re anxious about dental procedures, discuss sedation options with your dentist beforehand.
Bring headphones or ask if the office provides entertainment options. While the actual hands-on treatment time isn’t excessive, there will be periods where the computer is designing your crown or the milling machine is working. Many patients appreciate having something to occupy their time.
We start just like any crown procedure—with local anesthetic to ensure you’re completely comfortable. Once you’re numb, I’ll prepare your tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to accommodate the crown. This involves removing a small amount of tooth structure from all surfaces to create room for the crown material.
The preparation process feels similar to getting a large filling. You’ll hear the handpiece (dental drill), feel some pressure, and experience vibration, but no pain. I’ll frequently check to make sure you’re comfortable throughout this step.
Paso 2: Escaneo digital (5-10 minutos)
Here’s where CEREC really shines compared to traditional crown procedures. Instead of filling your mouth with goopy impression material, I’ll use a small digital camera to capture detailed images of your prepared tooth and surrounding area.
The scanner looks like a small wand with a camera tip. I’ll move it around your tooth, taking hundreds of images that the computer stitches together into a precise 3D model. The process is comfortable—no gagging, no bad tastes, and you can breathe normally throughout. If I miss a spot or the scan isn’t perfect, we can easily retake that section.
You’ll actually get to see your tooth on the computer screen in full 3D detail. Most patients find this fascinating, though some are surprised by how much detail the scanner captures!
Paso 3: Diseño de la corona (10-15 minutos)
Once we have your digital impression, the CEREC software goes to work designing your crown. The computer analyzes your tooth’s shape, size, and relationship to neighboring teeth, then proposes a crown design that should fit perfectly and function naturally.
This is where my experience as a dentist really matters. While the computer does the heavy lifting, I review and refine the design, adjusting the shape, contacts with adjacent teeth, and bite relationships. I’m looking at factors like how the crown will affect your chewing, whether it matches your other teeth aesthetically, and ensuring the margins seal properly against your natural tooth.
You can relax during this phase—I’m focused on the computer screen, making small adjustments to perfect your crown design. Some patients like to watch the design process, while others prefer to close their eyes or listen to music.
Paso 4: Fresado de la corona (15-20 minutos)
Once I’m satisfied with the digital design, we send it to the milling machine. The mill uses diamond-coated burs to carve your crown from a solid block of ceramic material. The precision is remarkable—we’re talking about accuracy measured in microns.
You’ll hear the milling machine working in the background. It sounds a bit like a combination of a dental handpiece and a small manufacturing machine, which is essentially what it is. The noise isn’t loud or disturbing, just a consistent humming and occasional higher-pitched sounds as the burs work.
During milling, I’ll often use this time to discuss post-treatment care, answer any questions you have, or simply let you rest. Some patients are amazed that their crown is being made just a few feet away while they wait.
When your crown comes out of the mill, it’s the right shape and size, but it needs finishing touches. I’ll check the fit on your tooth, make any minor adjustments needed for proper contact with adjacent teeth, and ensure your bite feels natural.
This step involves trying the crown in and out several times, making small adjustments, and checking your bite with colored paper. It’s meticulous work, but essential for ensuring your crown feels natural and functions properly.
Paso 6: Cementación final (5-10 minutos)
Once I’m satisfied with the fit and appearance, it’s time for permanent placement. I’ll clean your prepared tooth thoroughly, apply bonding agents, and cement your crown in place using dental adhesive.
The cementation process involves keeping the area dry, applying various bonding materials, and ensuring the crown is seated properly. You’ll need to bite down firmly for several minutes while the cement sets. After the cement hardens, I’ll remove any excess material and check your bite one final time.
¿Qué se siente durante un tratamiento CEREC?
Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the CEREC process is. The numbing injection is typically the most uncomfortable part of the entire procedure. Once you’re numb, the tooth preparation feels like pressure and vibration without pain.
During the design and milling phases, you’re simply relaxing in the chair while technology does the work. Some patients nap during this time, while others enjoy watching the process or chatting about the technology.
The crown try-in and adjustment phase involves some pressure as I check the fit, but nothing uncomfortable. By the time we’re cementing your final crown, you’re in the home stretch.
You’ll leave the office with your permanent crown already in place—no temporary crown, no second appointment needed. However, you’ll be numb for several hours, so avoid eating until the anesthetic wears off to prevent accidentally biting your tongue or cheek.
I always schedule a brief follow-up call or visit within a few days to ensure you’re comfortable with your new crown and address any concerns.
Understanding the technology can help you appreciate what’s happening during your appointment. The digital scanner uses optical technology to capture thousands of images per second, creating incredibly detailed 3D models of your teeth.
The milling machine uses computer-controlled precision to carve your crown from medical-grade ceramic blocks. These materials are often stronger and more durable than traditional crown materials, and they’re biocompatible with your natural tooth structure.
It’s worth noting that practices investing heavily in chairside technology like CEREC often bring that same efficiency mindset to other aspects of patient care. I’ve found that systems like Intake.Dental complement our digital workflow perfectly, streamlining patient records and transfers with the same precision we expect from our CEREC system.
¿Es CEREC adecuado para todos los casos?
While CEREC is excellent for most single crown situations, it’s not the perfect solution for every case. Complex aesthetic situations involving multiple front teeth might benefit from traditional lab fabrication, where a skilled technician can spend days perfecting the appearance.
CEREC es ideal para:
- Coronas individuales en cualquier diente
- Incrustaciones y recubrimientos
“What if it doesn’t fit right?” The digital process is extremely accurate, but if adjustments are needed, I can make them immediately. In rare cases where a crown needs to be remade, we can do it the same day.
“Is the appointment too long?” While 90 minutes to two hours is longer than a typical cleaning, most patients find it manageable, especially knowing they won’t need to return for a second appointment.
Impresiones digitales. Radiografías digitales. ¿Formularios de admisión en papel?
Something doesn’t add up. Intake.Dental was built by a practicing CEREC dentist to eliminate the last analog step in a modern practice. Digital forms, seamless transfers, happy patients.
Preguntas frecuentes
Most dental insurance plans cover CEREC crowns the same way they cover traditional crowns. The insurance company typically doesn’t distinguish between the fabrication methods—they’re both considered standard crown procedures.
Care for your CEREC crown exactly like your natural teeth—regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups. The crown material doesn’t decay, but the underlying tooth structure still needs protection from bacteria and plaque.
