Ihr umfassender Leitfaden zu CEREC: Was Sie bei Ihrem Termin zur Kronenversorgung am selben Tag erwartet

If you’ve been told you need a crown and your dentist mentioned CEREC, you’re probably wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into. Will it hurt? How long does it take? Is it really possible to get a crown in one visit?

As a practicing CEREC dentist who’s placed thousands of same-day crowns, I understand your concerns. The idea of getting a crown made and placed in a single appointment can feel almost too good to be true. Let me walk you through exactly what happens during a CEREC appointment so you know what to expect.

Was ist CEREC eigentlich genau?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. That’s a mouthful, but it simply means we can create beautiful, durable ceramic crowns right in the dental office while you wait.

Vor Ihrem Termin: Was Sie wissen sollten

Your CEREC appointment will be longer than a typical dental visit. Block out 2-4 hours, depending on how many crowns you’re getting. Most single crowns take 2-3 hours from start to finish.

Here’s what to do before you arrive:

  • Eat beforehand: You’ll be numb for several hours after the appointment
  • Take any prescribed medications: If your dentist recommended pre-medication, don’t skip it
  • Sorgen Sie für Unterhaltung: Laden Sie Podcasts, Hörbücher oder Musik für die Wartezeit herunter
  • Arrange transportation: You’ll be able to drive, but some patients prefer not to immediately after a longer appointment

Schritt für Schritt: Der Ablauf Ihres CEREC-Termins

Schritt 1: Betäubung und Vorbereitung (20–30 Minuten)

We start just like any crown appointment. After getting you comfortable, I’ll administer local anesthetic to numb the area completely. Modern anesthetics are very effective—you shouldn’t feel any discomfort during the procedure.

Once you’re numb, I’ll prepare your tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to receive the crown. This involves removing a small amount of tooth structure to make room for the crown material. The preparation is similar to traditional crown prep, but I can be more conservative because I have immediate feedback from the digital design process.

Schritt 2: Digitales Scannen (10–15 Minuten)

Here’s where CEREC gets interesting. Instead of taking gooey impressions that make you gag, I use a small digital camera to scan your teeth. The scanner looks like a chunky pen with a camera tip.

I’ll move the scanner around your mouth, capturing thousands of images that create a precise 3D model of your teeth. You’ll see your teeth appear on the computer screen in real-time—it’s actually pretty cool to watch.

The scanning process is comfortable. The camera tip is smooth and doesn’t require any impression material. Some patients find the scanning almost relaxing compared to traditional impressions.

Schritt 3: Gestaltung der Krone (15–20 Minuten)

Now comes the digital magic. Using CEREC software, I’ll design your crown on the computer. The software suggests an initial crown shape based on your tooth anatomy, but I customize every crown for optimal fit, function, and appearance.

During this phase, you can watch me design your crown or take a break. I’m looking at factors like:

  • Korrekter Kontakt zu den Nachbarzähnen
  • Korrekte Zahnstellung

Once the design is finalized, I send it to the CEREC milling unit. This machine carves your crown from a solid block of ceramic using diamond-coated burs. The precision is remarkable—we’re talking about accuracy measured in micrometers.

The milling unit sounds like a small machine shop, which can be startling at first. Many patients enjoy watching their crown being made through the milling chamber window. It’s fascinating to see a block of ceramic transformed into your custom crown.

When your crown comes out of the milling unit, it looks like a tooth but lacks the subtle color variations of natural enamel. I’ll add stains and glazes to match your other teeth, then fire the crown in a small oven to set these characterizations.

Now for the moment of truth. I’ll place your new crown to check the fit, bite, and appearance. CEREC crowns typically fit very well initially, but fine adjustments are normal and expected.

I’ll check:

Don’t worry if adjustments are needed—this is normal. It’s much easier to adjust a CEREC crown than to send you home with a temporary crown and hope the lab gets it right.

Schritt 7: Abschließende Zementierung (10–15 Minuten)

Once everything looks and feels perfect, I’ll permanently cement your crown. The tooth and crown are cleaned, and I apply a strong dental cement that bonds the crown to your tooth structure.

After cementation, I’ll do final bite checks and polish any rough spots. Your crown is now permanently in place and ready for normal use.

The tooth preparation feels similar to getting a large filling. Once you’re numb, you shouldn’t feel pain, just pressure and vibration. Some patients even doze off during the milling phase.

Nach Ihrer CEREC-Krone: Was Sie erwartet

When you leave the office, your crown is complete and fully functional. Here’s what to expect in the following days:

Langzeitpflege

CEREC crowns are cared for just like natural teeth. Brush, floss, and maintain regular dental visits. The crown itself won’t decay, but the tooth underneath still can if plaque accumulates at the margins.

  • Immediate feedback: Adjustments happen while you’re still numb

I believe in being honest about limitations. CEREC isn’t perfect for every situation:

  • Time constraints: If you can’t block out 2-3 hours, traditional crowns might work better

Speaking of modern patient experiences, I’ve noticed that practices investing in chairside technology like CEREC often overlook their front-desk workflow. Digital impressions paired with digital intake forms create a seamless experience from the moment patients walk in. Tools like Intake.Dental complement the high-tech chairside experience with equally modern patient onboarding.

The goal is eliminating friction at every step—whether that’s avoiding messy impressions or reducing paperwork delays.

  • What happens if the crown doesn’t fit properly?

What if I don’t like how my CEREC crown looks?

Since the crown is made while you’re in the chair, we can address appearance concerns immediately. If major changes are needed, we can mill a new crown the same day. This is actually an advantage over traditional crowns, where you might not see the final result until the second appointment.

Können CEREC-Kronen aufgehellt werden?

Ceramic crowns don’t respond to whitening treatments, just like traditional crowns. If you’re planning to whiten your teeth, it’s best to do so before getting your CEREC crown so we can match the crown to your desired tooth color.

Ist die CEREC-Behandlung teurer als herkömmliche Kronen?

CEREC crown fees are typically similar to traditional crown fees. While the technology is sophisticated, you’re saving the cost and time of a second appointment. Many patients find the convenience worth any small cost difference.
