As a practicing CEREC dentist, I’ve seen thousands of patients go through this process. Some arrive nervous and uncertain, others excited about the convenience. What they all share is a desire to understand what’s actually going to happen during their appointment.
Was genau ist CEREC?
CEREC stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics” — but don’t worry about memorizing that mouthful. What matters is what it does: CEREC is a computer-aided system that designs and creates your crown right in the dental office while you wait.
Vor Ihrem CEREC-Termin: Was Sie wissen sollten
First, let’s be honest about something important: not every crown situation is ideal for CEREC. Your dentist should have already determined that you’re a good candidate, but CEREC works best for:
Your appointment will typically be scheduled for 1.5 to 2.5 hours — longer than a regular filling, but shorter than you’d spend in total appointments with traditional crown methods.
Schritt für Schritt: Ihre CEREC-Kronenbehandlung
Schritt 1: Betäubung und Vorbereitung (15–20 Minuten)
Just like with any crown, we start by numbing the area around your tooth. You’ll receive a local anesthetic injection — the same type used for fillings. Some patients worry this will be more painful than usual, but it’s exactly the same process.
Once you’re numb, your dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to receive the crown. This involves removing a small amount of tooth structure from all sides — typically about 1-2 millimeters. You’ll hear the dental drill, but you shouldn’t feel any discomfort.
Schritt 2: Digitale Abformung (5–10 Minuten)
Here’s where CEREC really shines. Instead of biting into trays filled with impression material (which many patients find uncomfortable), your dentist uses a small digital camera to capture detailed 3D images of your prepared tooth.
The camera looks like a small wand and is moved around your tooth from different angles. You might taste a light dusting powder that’s sometimes applied to help the camera capture clearer images. The whole process takes just a few minutes, and you can actually watch your tooth appear on the computer screen in real-time.
Schritt 3: Gestaltung der Krone (10–15 Minuten)
This is where the magic happens, and it’s actually pretty fascinating to watch. Your dentist uses specialized software to design your crown based on the digital impressions. The computer suggests an initial crown shape based on normal tooth anatomy, but your dentist fine-tunes it to match your specific bite and neighboring teeth.
You’ll see your crown being designed on the computer screen. Many patients find this part interesting — you’re literally watching your new tooth being created digitally. Your dentist will adjust the shape, size, and contact points with adjacent teeth to ensure proper fit and function.
The milling process is surprisingly fast, typically taking 10-20 minutes depending on the crown’s complexity. The machine uses diamond-coated burs to precisely carve the crown from the ceramic block. It’s quite loud — think of a small workshop tool — but you’ll be in the dental chair, not right next to the machine.
When your crown comes out of the milling machine, it looks remarkably close to a natural tooth, but it’s not quite ready yet. Your dentist will try it on your tooth to check the fit, bite, and contact with neighboring teeth.
Don’t be surprised if some adjustments are needed — this is completely normal and expected. Your dentist might need to adjust the crown’s shape slightly, modify how it contacts neighboring teeth, or fine-tune your bite. These adjustments are made with small dental instruments and usually take 15-30 minutes.
You’ll be asked to bite down on special paper to check your bite alignment. This might feel strange at first since your mouth is still numb, but your dentist is trained to evaluate proper fit even when you can’t feel everything normally.
Schritt 6: Endpolieren und Zementieren (10–15 Minuten)
Once the fit is perfect, your crown receives final polishing to give it a natural, smooth surface that matches your other teeth. Then it’s permanently cemented onto your prepared tooth using dental adhesive.
The cementation process involves cleaning both the crown and your tooth, applying the cement, and placing the crown. You’ll bite down firmly while the cement sets, which takes just a few minutes.
Wie fühlt sich eine CEREC-Behandlung an?
Let me be honest about the experience. The procedure itself is comfortable — you’re numb throughout the active treatment portions. However, it does require keeping your mouth open for extended periods, which can be tiring for your jaw muscles.
CEREC crowns are milled from solid ceramic blocks, making them incredibly strong and durable. The digital design process often results in better-fitting crowns than traditional impression methods, especially since there’s no chance for impression material to distort or shipping to damage the model.
Sofortige Befriedigung
There’s something psychologically satisfying about walking out with your permanent crown the same day. You don’t spend weeks thinking about your dental work or worrying about your temporary crown.
Speaking of digital efficiency, I’ve noticed that practices investing in chairside technology like CEREC often overlook streamlining their front-desk workflow. Tools like Intake.Dental can digitize patient intake forms in over 20 languages, complementing the universal language of great dentistry that CEREC provides.
Mögliche Einschränkungen und ehrliche Nachteile
CEREC isn’t perfect for every situation, and I believe in being upfront about limitations:
Zeitaufwand
Yes, it’s one appointment, but it’s a long appointment. Some patients find 2+ hours in the dental chair challenging, especially if they have jaw problems or difficulty staying comfortable for extended periods.
Kostenaspekte
Lernkurve
CEREC results depend heavily on your dentist’s experience with the system. A dentist who’s been using CEREC for years will typically achieve better results than someone new to the technology.
Nach Ihrer CEREC-Krone: Was Sie erwartet
Sofortige Nachsorge
Langzeitpflege
CEREC crowns are cared for just like natural teeth: brush twice daily, floss regularly, and maintain regular dental checkups. The crown itself won’t decay, but the tooth underneath it still can if bacteria get under the crown margins.
Bevor Sie Ihren CEREC-Termin vereinbaren, sollten Sie Folgendes klären:
- What happens if the crown doesn’t fit properly?
CEREC handles the clinical side brilliantly. But if patients are still scribbling on clipboards in your waiting room, there’s a gap. Intake.Dental closes it — digital intake in 20+ languages, automatic record transfers, and a patient experience that matches your operatory.
CEREC crowns typically last 10-15 years or longer, which is comparable to traditional lab-made crowns. The longevity depends more on your oral hygiene, bite forces, and the tooth’s condition than on whether it was made in-office or at a lab. Some studies suggest CEREC crowns may actually last longer due to their superior fit and the strength of being milled from solid ceramic blocks.
If there are issues with the crown fit or if it breaks during the try-in process, your dentist can simply design and mill a new crown the same day. This is one advantage of having the technology right in the office. In rare cases where multiple attempts don’t achieve the desired result, your dentist might recommend switching to a traditional crown approach.
You should wait until the numbness wears off before eating to avoid accidentally biting your tongue or cheek. Once the anesthetic has worn off, you can eat normally, though it’s wise to start with softer foods and avoid very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours while you adjust to your new crown.
