CEREC stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics”—but that’s the last time I’ll use that mouthful of technical terms. Simply put, CEREC is a system that lets your dentist create and place permanent ceramic restorations (crowns, fillings, veneers, and bridges) in a single visit.
Most CEREC appointments are scheduled for 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the complexity of your restoration. Here’s what you should know before arriving:
Vorbereitung auf den Termin
- Eat beforehand: You’ll be numb for several hours after the procedure
If you’re replacing an existing crown or large filling, your dentist may have already taken preliminary X-rays and discussed your treatment plan. For emergency situations like a broken tooth, some of this planning happens the same day.
Schritt für Schritt: Ihr CEREC-Behandlungsablauf
Schritt 1: Betäubung und Vorbereitung (15–30 Minuten)
Your appointment starts just like any other dental procedure requiring anesthesia. Your dentist will numb the area around your tooth with local anesthetic. Don’t worry—this is typically the most uncomfortable part of the entire process, and it only lasts a few seconds.
Once you’re numb, your dentist prepares your tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to receive the restoration. For crowns, this means removing a small amount of tooth structure to make room for the ceramic. For inlays or onlays, the preparation is more conservative.
This step is crucial because the quality of your final restoration depends heavily on good preparation. Your dentist takes time to ensure smooth margins and proper shape—it’s not rushed just because it’s same-day treatment.
Schritt 2: Digitale Abformung (5–15 Minuten)
Here’s where CEREC really shines compared to traditional methods. Instead of biting into goopy impression material, your dentist uses a small camera (about the size of a thick marker) to take pictures of your prepared tooth.
The camera captures thousands of data points to create a precise 3D model. Your dentist moves it around your tooth, taking pictures from different angles. You might taste a light dusting powder that helps the camera see details better—it’s completely harmless and rinses away easily.
This digital impression is often more accurate than traditional impressions because there’s no material to distort or tear. If your dentist isn’t happy with any part of the scan, they can easily retake that section.
Schritt 3: Entwurfsphase (10–20 Minuten)
The software suggests an initial design, but your dentist fine-tunes it to ensure proper fit, bite, and appearance. They’ll adjust the shape, check that it doesn’t interfere with your other teeth, and make sure the margins seal properly against your natural tooth.
Many patients enjoy watching this process—it’s like seeing your tooth being rebuilt virtually. Your dentist might show you the design and explain what they’re adjusting, though some prefer to focus entirely on getting the design perfect.
The milling process is automated, so this is your break time. You can read, listen to music, or even take a short walk if your office allows it. The machine isn’t particularly loud, but you’ll hear it working in the background.
Don’t be surprised if it doesn’t fit perfectly right away. Minor adjustments are completely normal and expected. Your dentist checks:
Any necessary adjustments are made with small dental burs. This process might take a few tries to get everything just right—your dentist’s goal is a restoration that feels completely natural.
The final step is bonding your restoration permanently to your tooth. Your dentist cleans both the restoration and your prepared tooth, applies bonding agents, and cements the restoration in place using a strong adhesive that’s hardened with a special light.
After bonding, your dentist makes final bite adjustments and polishes everything smooth. They’ll check your bite multiple times to ensure comfort.
Wie fühlt sich eine CEREC-Behandlung an?
Most patients are surprised by how comfortable CEREC treatment is. Once you’re numb, you shouldn’t feel any pain during the preparation or fitting process. You’ll feel pressure and vibration, but no sharp or uncomfortable sensations.
The digital impression process feels like someone gently moving a small camera around your mouth. Some patients find the camera’s size takes a moment to get used to, but it’s not uncomfortable.
During the milling phase, you’re essentially getting a break. Many patients find this relaxing time, though some feel anxious about the waiting. Bring something to occupy your mind if you tend to worry.
The try-in and adjustment phase involves more pressure as your dentist checks the fit and bite. You’ll be asked to bite down and move your jaw in different directions—all normal parts of ensuring your restoration functions properly.
This is probably the most common concern I hear, and it’s understandable. However, CEREC treatment isn’t rushed—it’s efficient. Your dentist spends the same amount of time on preparation, design, and fitting as they would with traditional methods. The difference is that everything happens in one appointment instead of being spread across multiple visits.
„Was, wenn etwas schiefgeht?“
True failures—like a restoration that doesn’t fit at all—are rare with experienced CEREC dentists. If something isn’t right, your dentist can often remake the restoration the same day since all the equipment is right there.
Nach Ihrer CEREC-Behandlung
When you leave the office, you’ll have a permanent restoration that’s ready for normal use once your numbness wears off. Here’s what to expect:
While CEREC is excellent for many situations, it’s not always the best choice. Your dentist might recommend traditional lab-made restorations for:
- Patients with limited mouth opening who can’t accommodate the camera
- Choose an experienced CEREC dentist: Ask how many restorations they’ve completed

Once your numbness wears off, you can eat normally. However, it’s wise to avoid very hard or sticky foods for the first day as you adjust to your new restoration and ensure it feels comfortable.
What if my CEREC restoration doesn’t feel right?
Contact your dentist if your restoration feels high, causes pain, or doesn’t seem to fit properly. Minor adjustments are common and easily made. Don’t try to “get used to” a restoration that feels significantly off.
