This part is identical to traditional crown preparation. The tooth needs to be reduced in size to make room for the crown material while maintaining enough structure for a strong foundation. You’ll hear the drill, but you shouldn’t feel any pain—just pressure and vibration.

The entire scanning process takes just a few minutes, and you can actually watch your tooth appear on the computer screen in real-time. Many patients find this fascinating—you’re seeing your tooth in high-definition 3D!

If the scan doesn’t capture everything perfectly the first time, we can easily re-scan specific areas. No need to redo the entire impression like with traditional methods.

Schritt 3: Gestaltung der Krone (15–20 Minuten)

While you relax in the chair, I’ll use CEREC’s design software to create your custom crown. This is where the technology really impresses—the software analyzes your bite, the surrounding teeth, and the prepared tooth to suggest an optimal crown design.

This step requires precision and experience. While the software provides an excellent starting point, your dentist’s expertise is crucial in fine-tuning the design for optimal fit, function, and appearance.

Schritt 4: Fräsen Ihrer Krone (15–20 Minuten)

Once the design is finalized, we’ll send it to the CEREC milling machine. This is probably the coolest part of the process—watching a ceramic block transform into your custom crown.

The milling unit uses diamond-coated burs to precisely carve your crown from a solid block of ceramic material. The machine works with incredible accuracy—we’re talking about precision measured in microns.

You’ll hear the milling machine working, but it’s not particularly loud or disturbing. Many patients enjoy watching through the machine’s window as their crown takes shape. The entire milling process typically takes 15-20 minutes, depending on the complexity of your crown.

We’ll select a ceramic block that matches your tooth color as closely as possible. CEREC offers various shades and even multi-layered blocks that mimic the natural color variations in real teeth.

Schritt 5: Anpassen und Verkleben (20–30 Minuten)

When your crown comes out of the milling machine, it’s already very close to the final result, but we’re not done yet. I’ll try the crown on your tooth to check the fit, bite, and appearance.

These adjustments are made with small dental instruments and polishing tools. You’ll be asked to bite down on special paper that shows high spots, and we’ll make small modifications until everything feels just right.

Once the fit is perfect, we’ll permanently bond the crown to your tooth. This involves:

Good news—caring for your CEREC crown is exactly like caring for your natural teeth. Brush twice daily, floss regularly, and maintain your regular dental checkups. The ceramic material won’t stain like natural teeth, but the margins where the crown meets your tooth still need attention to prevent decay.

Ist CEREC für jeden geeignet?

While I’m a big advocate for CEREC technology, I want to be honest—it’s not perfect for every situation. CEREC works excellently for single crowns, especially on back teeth where strength is more important than perfect color matching.

Bei Frontzähnen, bei denen die Ästhetik entscheidend ist, oder bei komplexen Fällen mit mehreren Kronen, die eine perfekte Farbabstimmung erfordern, sind herkömmliche, im Labor gefertigte Kronen möglicherweise immer noch die bessere Wahl.
