Materialvergleich: Lithiumdisilikat vs. Zirkonoxid für CEREC-Restaurationen – Was sollten Sie wählen?
If you’ve been doing CEREC for more than a week, you’ve probably found yourself staring at the material selection screen wondering: “Do I go with lithium disilicate or zirconia for this case?” It’s one of those decisions that can make or break your restoration’s success, and honestly, there’s no universal answer.
📑 Inhaltsverzeichnis
After milling thousands of restorations over the years, I’ve learned that material selection isn’t just about strength numbers or aesthetics in isolation—it’s about matching the right material to the specific clinical situation. Let me walk you through what I’ve discovered about these two workhorses of the CEREC world.
Die Geschichte zweier Materialien: Die Grundlagen verstehen
Before we dive into the clinical nitty-gritty, let’s establish what we’re actually working with. Lithium disilicate and zirconia represent two fundamentally different approaches to ceramic restoration materials, each with distinct properties that affect everything from your milling parameters to long-term clinical success.
Lithiumdisilikat: Das ästhetische Chamäleon
Lithium disilicate has become the go-to choice for many CEREC users, and for good reason. With a flexural strength around 400 MPa, it hits that sweet spot where it’s strong enough for most applications while maintaining excellent translucency and color-matching capabilities.
What I love about lithium disilicate is its predictability. When you mill an e.max CAD block, you know exactly what you’re getting. The material machines beautifully, gives you crisp margins, and the crystallization process is straightforward. Plus, the range of translucencies available means you can match almost any clinical situation.
The crystallization step is crucial here—don’t skip it or rush it. I’ve seen too many colleagues try to shortcut this process and end up with marginal failures down the line. The material needs that full crystallization cycle to reach its optimal properties.
Zirkon: Der Champion der Festigkeit
Zirconia, on the other hand, is your heavy hitter. With flexural strengths that can exceed 1000 MPa, it’s the material you reach for when you need maximum durability. Modern zirconia formulations have come a long way from the opaque, chalky materials of the early days.
The newer high-translucency zirconias have dramatically improved aesthetics while maintaining much of their strength advantage. However, there’s always a trade-off—as translucency increases, strength typically decreases. It’s physics, not marketing.
Klinische Anwendungen: Wann was wählen
Here’s where the rubber meets the road. After years of placing both materials, I’ve developed some guidelines that serve me well in daily practice.
Anwendungsszenarien für Lithiumdisilikat
In solchen Situationen greife ich zu Lithiumdisilikat:
Anterior restorations where aesthetics are paramount. Nothing beats lithium disilicate for matching natural tooth translucency and opalescence. The material’s optical properties are simply superior for anterior work, especially in the aesthetic zone.
Posterior single crowns with normal occlusion. For routine posterior crowns where the patient doesn’t have heavy bruxing habits or extreme occlusal forces, lithium disilicate provides more than adequate strength with better aesthetics than zirconia.
Veneers and minimal prep restorations. The ability to achieve thin sections while maintaining strength makes lithium disilicate ideal for conservative preparations. I’ve successfully placed 0.5mm veneers that have performed beautifully for years.
Zirkoniumdioxid-Gebiet
Zirkoniumoxid ist mein bevorzugtes Material, wenn:
Dealing with heavy occlusal forces. Bruxers, clenchers, and patients with parafunctional habits get zirconia posterior restorations. The material’s toughness and resistance to crack propagation are unmatched.
Posterior bridges are needed. The superior strength of zirconia makes it the obvious choice for posterior bridge work. I won’t place a lithium disilicate bridge in the posterior region—the risk isn’t worth it.
Minimal reduction scenarios in posterior teeth. When you can’t achieve ideal reduction due to pulp proximity or existing restorations, zirconia’s strength allows for thinner sections than lithium disilicate in high-stress areas.
Patients with a history of ceramic fractures. If a patient has broken ceramic restorations before, zirconia’s fracture toughness provides better long-term security.
Lithium disilicate mills like a dream in the pre-crystallized state. You’ll get clean margins, smooth surfaces, and minimal tool wear. The material is forgiving of minor variations in milling parameters, though you should still stick to manufacturer recommendations.
One practical tip: I always check my milling burs before starting a zirconia case. A worn bur can lead to chipping or poor surface finish that’s difficult to correct post-sintering.
Zirconia’s sintering time—usually 2-3 hours—makes true same-day delivery challenging unless you have a speed sintering protocol. Many practices opt for a two-appointment protocol with zirconia, which affects scheduling and patient flow.
With zirconia, I’m more conservative with contact tightness and occlusal anatomy because post-sintering adjustments are more challenging. The material’s hardness makes chairside modifications time-consuming.
Langzeit-Klinische Wirksamkeit
Let’s talk about what really matters—how these materials perform over time in actual mouths.
Zirconia failures are less common but tend to be more catastrophic when they occur. However, the material’s toughness means it’s more likely to survive minor trauma that might fracture lithium disilicate.
Interestingly, I’ve noticed that lithium disilicate failures are often easier to repair or remake because the fracture patterns tend to be cleaner. Zirconia failures sometimes involve more complex fracture patterns that can affect the underlying tooth structure.
Let’s be honest—material costs matter in practice management. Lithium disilicate blocks are generally less expensive than zirconia, and the shorter processing time means lower overhead per restoration.
However, zirconia’s superior durability in high-stress situations can provide better long-term value by reducing remake rates. It’s a classic quality versus cost calculation that each practice needs to evaluate based on their patient population and clinical protocols.
Regardless of which material you choose, here are some practical tips I’ve learned over the years:
Follow processing protocols religiously. Both materials are sensitive to processing variations. Don’t improvise with firing schedules or sintering cycles.
Consider the total treatment plan. Sometimes the best material choice for one tooth is influenced by what you’re planning for adjacent teeth.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
Kann ich Lithiumdisilikat für Seitenzahnbrücken verwenden?
I don’t recommend lithium disilicate for posterior bridges, especially in the molar region. The material’s flexural strength, while adequate for single crowns, isn’t sufficient for the stress concentrations found in bridge connectors. Stick with zirconia for posterior bridge work.
For anterior crowns, lithium disilicate still has the aesthetic advantage in most cases. High-translucency zirconia has improved significantly, but lithium disilicate’s optical properties remain superior for matching natural tooth translucency and opalescence. Choose zirconia anteriorly only when maximum strength is required.
What’s the learning curve difference between these materials?
Small chips in lithium disilicate can sometimes be polished out or repaired with composite. Zirconia repairs are more challenging due to the material’s hardness and bonding difficulties. In most cases, significant fractures in either material require complete remake of the restoration.
Lithium disilicate’s 20-25 minute crystallization cycle makes it ideal for true same-day delivery. Zirconia’s 2-3 hour sintering time typically requires either a two-appointment protocol or significant patient waiting time. Some practices use speed sintering protocols, but these may compromise material properties.
