Ihr umfassender Leitfaden zu CEREC-Zahnkronen aus einer Hand: Was Sie bei Ihrem Termin erwartet
If your dentist has recommended a CEREC same-day crown, you’re probably wondering what exactly you’re signing up for. The idea of getting a permanent crown in a single visit might sound too good to be true, especially if you’ve heard horror stories about traditional crowns requiring multiple appointments and temporary crowns that fall out at the worst possible moment.

As a dentist who’s placed thousands of CEREC crowns, I can tell you that the technology really has revolutionized how we approach crown treatment. But I also know that walking into any dental procedure without knowing what to expect can be anxiety-provoking. That’s why I’m going to walk you through exactly what happens during a CEREC appointment, from the moment you sit in the chair until you walk out with your permanent crown.
Vor Ihrem Termin: Was Sie wissen sollten
First, let’s set realistic expectations. A CEREC appointment typically takes 2-3 hours from start to finish. This might seem long compared to a regular cleaning, but remember – you’re getting what traditionally required two separate appointments condensed into one visit.
You’ll want to eat a normal meal before your appointment since you’ll be numb for several hours afterward. Also, if you’re prone to dental anxiety, discuss sedation options with your dentist beforehand. The CEREC process itself isn’t more uncomfortable than traditional crown preparation, but the longer appointment time can feel overwhelming for anxious patients.
Schritt 1: Betäubung und Vorbereitung (30–45 Minuten)
Your appointment begins just like any crown procedure would. Your dentist will administer local anesthetic to completely numb the tooth and surrounding area. Don’t rush this step – it’s worth waiting a few extra minutes to ensure you’re completely comfortable.
Once you’re numb, the tooth preparation begins. This involves removing any decay and reshaping the tooth to create an ideal foundation for the crown. Your dentist will remove about 1-2 millimeters of tooth structure from all surfaces, creating space for the crown while ensuring it won’t feel bulky or interfere with your bite.
Schritt 2: Digitales Scannen (10–15 Minuten)
Here’s where CEREC technology really shines. Instead of biting into goopy impression material that makes you gag, your dentist will use a small digital camera to capture detailed 3D images of your prepared tooth.
The scanning wand is about the size of a thick marker and captures thousands of images per second as your dentist moves it around your mouth. You might need to open wide or turn your head slightly to help capture all the necessary angles, but there’s no discomfort involved.
Once the scanning is complete, your dentist will design your crown using specialized CAD software. This isn’t a fully automated process – your dentist is actively involved in creating a crown that fits your specific anatomy and bite.
During this phase, you might be able to see the crown design on the computer screen. Your dentist will adjust the shape, size, and contours to ensure proper fit and function. Some patients worry that a computer-designed crown won’t be as good as one made by a human lab technician, but the reality is that your dentist has years of training in dental anatomy and is designing the crown specifically for your mouth.
This is also a good time to ask questions or express any concerns about the crown’s appearance, especially if it’s a front tooth. While the crown material is already selected (typically ceramic), your dentist can still make adjustments to the shape and contours.
The milling process is surprisingly quick – most crowns are completed in 15-20 minutes. You’ll hear the machine running (it sounds similar to a dental drill but more consistent), and some offices will let you watch the milling process if you’re interested.
During this time, your dentist might step away to see other patients or catch up on notes. Don’t worry – this is normal and doesn’t mean you’re being neglected. The machine does its work automatically once the design is uploaded.
Schritt 5: Fertigstellung und Charakterisierung (15–30 Minuten)
When your crown comes out of the milling machine, it’s the right shape and size but might look somewhat artificial. This is where your dentist’s artistic skills come into play.
Once everyone is satisfied with the fit and feel, it’s time to permanently cement the crown. Your dentist will clean both the tooth and crown thoroughly, then apply dental cement and seat the crown firmly in place.
You might feel pressure during this step, but it shouldn’t be painful. The cement sets quickly, and your dentist will remove any excess material from around the gum line.
After the cement is fully set, your dentist will do a final bite check and make any necessary adjustments. Your crown should feel comfortable immediately – while it might feel slightly different from your natural tooth, it shouldn’t feel high or interfere with your normal bite.
Wodurch unterscheidet sich CEREC von herkömmlichen Kronen?
The most obvious difference is completing everything in one appointment, but there are other advantages worth noting. CEREC crowns are milled from solid blocks of ceramic, making them incredibly strong and durable. There’s no metal substructure, so you don’t have to worry about dark lines appearing at the gum line over time.
However, CEREC isn’t perfect for every situation. Very long bridges, certain aesthetic cases requiring multiple shade layers, and some complex bite situations might still be better served with traditional lab-made restorations. A good CEREC dentist will be honest about when the technology is and isn’t the best choice.
Nach Ihrem Termin: Was Sie erwartet
You’ll leave the office with your permanent crown in place, but you’ll still be numb for several hours. Avoid eating until the numbness wears off to prevent accidentally biting your tongue or cheek.
Your CEREC crown should last 10-15 years or more with proper care. Brush and floss normally, avoid chewing ice or very hard objects, and maintain regular dental checkups. The crown itself can’t get cavities, but the tooth underneath can still develop decay at the margins if oral hygiene is poor.
Another common concern is aesthetics, particularly for front teeth. While CEREC can produce excellent aesthetic results, it does require skill and experience. If you’re getting a front tooth crown, make sure your dentist has extensive CEREC experience and can show you examples of their aesthetic work.

CEREC crowns can look very natural, especially on back teeth where function matters more than aesthetics. For front teeth, the results depend heavily on your dentist’s skill and experience with the system. The ceramic material has excellent optical properties, but achieving a perfect match requires proper shade selection and finishing techniques.
What happens if my CEREC crown doesn’t fit properly?
If the crown doesn’t fit well during the try-in phase, your dentist can make adjustments or, if necessary, mill a new crown. This is one advantage of having the milling machine in-office – corrections can be made immediately rather than waiting for a new crown from a lab. However, with proper scanning and design, significant fit issues are uncommon.
Are there any situations where CEREC isn’t recommended?
